Douyin vs TikTok: Why Your TikTok Following Doesn't Exist in China
No, Douyin is not the same as TikTok. Both are owned by ByteDance, but they’re separate apps with separate accounts, users and rules. TikTok isn’t available in mainland China, and Douyin is the version built for it. If you have millions of TikTok followers, none of them follow you on Douyin. You start from zero.
That surprises a lot of talent and managers. Here’s what’s actually different and what it means for you.
Why does ByteDance run two apps?
ByteDance chose to run two separate products instead of one global app. Douyin follows Chinese content rules and regulation. TikTok serves the rest of the world. The two run on different codebases, servers, content libraries and ad systems, so nothing you post on one shows up on the other.
Does my TikTok following carry over to Douyin?
No. Your TikTok login doesn’t work on Douyin, your followers don’t transfer, and your videos aren’t there. Verification is separate too. A verified TikTok badge means nothing to Douyin’s review team, which runs its own checks.
The good news is that fans in China may already know you. Clips of Western stars get reposted to Douyin all the time, often by fan accounts. That’s a sign of demand, but those accounts aren’t yours and the revenue isn’t either.
How big is Douyin?
Very big. According to QuestMobile data reported by 36Kr:
- Douyin had 714 million daily active users in July 2026, up 19% year over year.
- In July 2026, Douyin passed WeChat in total monthly time spent for the first time, with 19.4% of usage time among Chinese users versus WeChat’s 18.8%.
For comparison, all of China had about 1.28 billion monthly active smartphone users that month, according to the same data. Douyin is where a large share of that attention goes.
What’s different about Douyin?
| TikTok | Douyin | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Most countries outside mainland China | Mainland China |
| Account | Email or phone sign-up | Real-name verification; foreign users verify with a passport |
| Accounts per person | Multiple accounts allowed | One person, one account; duplicates risk suspension |
| Language | Any | Foreign-language video is fine, but posts need a Chinese title and description |
| Brand deals | TikTok Creator Marketplace and direct deals | Priced through Xingtu, ByteDance’s collaboration platform, plus a platform service fee |
| Commerce | TikTok Shop where available | Built-in shopping and live commerce, with stricter product and seller checks |
A few rules matter most for talent:
- Ownership is locked in. After real-name verification, account ownership can’t be changed. Set it up in your own name from day one.
- Ads must be labeled. Sponsored videos need a clear ad disclosure, and Douyin can remove undisclosed ads and suspend monetization.
- AI content must be labeled. Douyin requires its official AI label on AI-generated content, and deepfakes of real people without consent can get an account banned.
- Music and clips need rights. Reposting film clips or unlicensed music is a fast way to lose reach or monetization.
- Some topics are off-limits. Political content and anything touching sensitive national topics will be filtered or removed.
The official rules live in Douyin’s rule center, and they change. Check the current version before you post.
Can I just repost my TikToks on Douyin?
You can reuse some of your footage, but straight reposting rarely works. Douyin wants Chinese titles and descriptions, and posts that skip them can get limited exposure. Trends, sounds, humor and references are different. And music licensed for TikTok isn’t automatically licensed for Douyin.
The talent who do well treat Douyin as its own audience: same personality, but content made or adapted for Chinese viewers.
How do U.S. stars make money on Douyin?
There are a few main routes:
- Brand partnerships with Chinese and international brands, usually arranged through Xingtu.
- Livestreaming, including gifts from fans and live commerce. Live commerce has extra requirements for foreign creators, including product checks.
- Short-video monetization once an account meets Douyin’s eligibility thresholds.
None of these happen without a verified, active account that’s built an audience first.
Should I start with Douyin?
It depends on your category and your content. Douyin suits talent with strong short-form video, music, sports, comedy and anything visual. If your audience skews toward lifestyle, beauty or fashion, XiaoHongShu may be a better first step. If you want a direct line to your most loyal fans, look at WeChat.
