WeChat for U.S. Talent: How China's Super-App Works for Fans

WeChat is China’s everyday app: messaging, payments, news, short video and mini apps in one place. For U.S. talent, WeChat is where you keep a direct relationship with fans in China. It’s not where you go viral. It’s where the fans who found you elsewhere stay connected, read your updates and buy what you offer.

How big is WeChat?

Tencent reported 1.439 billion combined monthly active users for Weixin and WeChat as of June 30, 2026, in its second-quarter results. Weixin is the version used in mainland China, and WeChat is the international version. Tencent reports them together.

Daily use is just as high. QuestMobile data reported by 36Kr put WeChat at 931 million daily active users in July 2026.

What is WeChat actually used for?

Nearly everything. People in China use it to message friends and family, pay at shops, read articles, watch short videos, book services and run group chats. That’s why it’s called a super-app.

For talent, that matters in one way: your fans already open WeChat every day. If you have a presence there, you’re in the app they use most, not one they visit occasionally.

How is WeChat different from Instagram?

Instagram is built for discovery. Strangers find you through Explore and Reels. WeChat works more like a private network. There’s no big public feed where strangers stumble onto your posts. People follow your account because they already know you, usually from Douyin, Weibo, XiaoHongShu or a show, a game or a tour.

So think of the platforms as a funnel. Discovery happens on the public platforms. WeChat is where you keep the fans you’ve won.

What can talent do on WeChat?

Official Account

An Official Account is your verified page on WeChat. You publish articles, photo posts and announcements, and followers get them in their feed. It’s closer to a newsletter than a social profile, which makes it a good home for tour dates, releases, behind-the-scenes stories and anything you want fans to actually read.

Official Accounts are created on the WeChat Official Accounts Platform. Verification requires identity documents, and each person can hold only one verified account. Verification for overseas accounts is charged annually, though running the account itself is free.

Channels

Channels (视频号, sometimes called Video Accounts) is WeChat’s short-video and livestreaming feature. It’s the part of WeChat built for reach, because videos can be shared into chats and Moments, where friends see what friends watch. Tencent said total time spent on Channels grew more than 20% year over year in the second quarter of 2026.

Fan groups

Group chats are a big part of how fan communities work in China. A well-run fan group gives your most loyal fans a place to gather, share news and hear from you first. It needs active moderation, in Chinese, to stay healthy.

Mini Programs and shops

Mini Programs are apps that run inside WeChat. Talent can use them for merch, memberships, ticketing or exclusive content without asking fans to download anything.

What do I need to get verified?

Expect to provide:

  • A passport (plus a handheld photo for identity checks)
  • Proof that you’re a public figure, such as press coverage and verified accounts on other platforms
  • An authorization letter if someone else will manage the account for you
  • A Chinese mobile number for registration

Your account name and description need to be in Chinese, so choose your Chinese name carefully. It’s how fans will search for you.

Is WeChat the right first platform?

WeChat works best once fans already know you. If nobody in China has heard of you yet, start where discovery happens: Douyin for video, Weibo for news and conversation, or XiaoHongShu for lifestyle. Many talent launch WeChat at the same time as one of those, so new fans have somewhere to land.
