XiaoHongShu

XiaoHongShu (RED, Little Red Book) for U.S. Talent: A Guide

XiaoHongShu (小红书) is China’s lifestyle discovery app. You’ll also see it called RED, RedNote or Little Red Book. They’re all the same platform. People use it to find and share recommendations on fashion, beauty, travel, food, music and more. For U.S. talent, XiaoHongShu is where Chinese fans go to search for what you wear, use, play and love, which makes it one of the best places to build a lifestyle-driven audience.

How big is XiaoHongShu?

It depends on who’s counting. XiaoHongShu says it has over 400 million monthly active users, according to a 2026 company release. Independent tracker QuestMobile measures it differently and reported about 245 million monthly active users in March 2026, according to 36Kr.

Either way, it’s one of China’s biggest platforms, and it’s still growing.

Wasn’t RedNote the app Americans joined in 2025?

Yes. In January 2025, as a possible U.S. TikTok ban approached, many American users who called themselves “TikTok refugees” joined RedNote, and it became the most downloaded app on Apple’s U.S. App Store, the BBC reported.

That moment put the app on the map for a lot of Americans. But its core audience is still in China, and that’s the audience this guide is about.

How do people use XiaoHongShu?

Like a search engine with a social feed on top. Users post “notes,” which are photo or video posts with detailed write-ups, about products, outfits, places and experiences. Other users search those notes before they decide what to buy or where to go. XiaoHongShu describes this as a path from browsing to searching to deciding.

That changes what works:

  • Useful beats flashy. Posts that teach, review or show something in detail do well.
  • Search matters. Titles and keywords in Chinese help fans find your notes long after you post.
  • Authenticity counts. The community reacts badly to content that feels like a hard sell.

Who does well on XiaoHongShu?

Talent with a strong lifestyle angle: fashion, beauty, fitness, food, travel, music and anything with a look or a routine fans want to copy. If fans already ask what you’re wearing or using, XiaoHongShu is built for that conversation.

It’s also a place where brands look for creators, which leads to the money side.

How do brand deals work on XiaoHongShu?

Brand collaborations run through Pugongying (蒲公英), XiaoHongShu’s official creator-collaboration platform. According to Jademond, a platform service fee of about 10% is added on top of the creator’s fee.

Sponsored posts must be clearly labeled as ads. Undisclosed sponsorships break the platform’s rules and can lead to removal or penalties.

What does a Pro account take?

A Pro account (专业号) is XiaoHongShu’s professional account, with analytics, brand-collaboration tools and live streaming. A few things to know:

  • You need an established account first. XiaoHongShu wants to see an active account with regular posts and a real following before it approves a professional or public-figure application. This is often the slowest part of launching, so start early.
  • Identity checks apply. Expect to verify with a passport.
  • There may be a fee. Jademond reports business account verification at about RMB 600 (roughly $85).

What are the rules I should know?

XiaoHongShu’s community rules cover the basics, and they’re stricter than most U.S. platforms:

  • Label ads and AI content. Sponsored content needs an ad disclosure, and AI-generated content needs an AI label.
  • Use original or licensed images. Reposting photos you don’t have rights to can get content removed.
  • Post with a Chinese title and description. Foreign-language subtitles are fine, but the platform expects Chinese text.
  • Stay away from politics. Political content is off-limits.

Penalties usually escalate from a warning to restrictions to suspension, so small mistakes add up.

Is XiaoHongShu the right first platform?

If your brand is lifestyle-driven, it’s often the best first step. If you’re more about video and entertainment, compare it with Douyin. For news and fan conversation, see Weibo. And to keep fans close once they find you, see WeChat.
